Slow Food in Bulgaria supports the protest of residents of Kurtovo Konare

Today, once again, the residents of Kurtovo Konare village protested against the illegal construction of a stone quarry near their village.

Apart from the fact that the quarry will directly damage one of Besaparski Hills, part of the Natura 2000 network, it will cause a number of environmental problems – limited access to water, air pollution and practical spoilage of the harvest of fruits and vegetables, the main livelihood of the people in the village.

Slow Food in Bulgaria supports the protest of residents of Kurtovo Konare not only because the quarry threatens the livelihood of the local community (Convivium Kurtovo Konare), but also because this quarry jeopardizes the existence of 4 products – Pink tomato from Kurtovo Konare, Kurtovska kapia pepper, Kurtovka apple, Red Kurtovka peach that have originated and are cultivated in the area and are included in the Slow Food Ark of Taste.

These products are part of the campaign of the Bulgarian MEP Momchil Nekov “Let’s save the Bulgarian Taste” and would have the real chance of being registered as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)”
