Brief Description

There were 15 farmers coming from different communes of Elbasan (Communes of Kryezjarr, Kuqan, Bathez, Gjinar, Shirgjan), Mr. Pier Paolo Ambrosi (project manager), Mr. Dritan Kolleshi (ESSEDRA project expert) and Mrs. Katia Zene (staff VIS Albania) participating in the meeting. The farmers were members of Sh.B.R. Agricultural Federation of Elbasan (F.B.E.), which is established in Shirgjan Commune and legally registered by the Tribunal of Tirana. The Federation includes approximately 500 members who cultivated mostly olives, besides vegetables in the fields and greenhouses. The Federation owns a fabric for producing a qualitative olive oil, even extra virgin one, which is certified and licensed under the name of “VALMI”.
The meeting started with the presentation of VIS Albania and the ESSEDRA project in the Balkans and in Albania. Mr. Ambrosi explained about the actual EU production standards and how these requirements will be soon approved and required in Albania and those farmers, as small-scale producers, will have to adapt their production chain to these new requirements and standards. The discussion was mainly focused on the production of olive oil and its commerce, beginning from the standards of collecting the olives and finishing with the final labelled product. The farmers said that they are already taking in consideration the new European standards, as they have already their own label for the olive oil. They said they fulfill the requirements of producing and packaging and they have spent a lot for this. On the other hand, they miss such criteria when talking about vegetables. The farmers complained that no one knows the origin of their products (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc). They also miss a storehouse for these products.
The second part of the meeting was focused on the Ark of Taste products. The participants stated that their area has many autochthonous varieties of apples and sheep but they can hardly be found nowadays.
