There were 7 farmers of Zvirinë Commune (Korçë), Mr. Dritan Kolleshi (ESSEDRA project expert) and Mrs. Katia Zene (staff VIS Albania) participating in the meeting. The farmers cultivated mostly apples, onions, beans and potatoes and during this period, they were busy collecting beans and potatoes. As this area is located approximately 1000 m above the sea level, the quality of their agricultural products is very high. The Korça apples and beans are very famous in Albania for their delicious taste. Less than 10% of families are engaged with stockbreeding.
During the meeting, the expert talked mainly about the EU production standards and how these requirements will be soon approved and required in Albania and those farmers, as small-scale producers, will have to adapt their production chain to these new requirements and standards. The discussion became interactive. The farmers complained that their products are sold all over the country, but no one knows their origin. In most cases, merchants abused with their products: Myzeqeja (Western Albania) potatoes and beans are sold under the name of Korça ones. A label for their products was their main preoccupation.
Also, it was interesting to know that this region continues to cultivate their traditional beans, red peppers (gogozhare), corn and wheat, even though the production area remains isolated within Korça region. The women had prepared traditional dishes (byrek në saç) and traditional corn for tasting.
