Brief Description

There were 16 farmers of Pajove Commune (Peqin, Elbasan), Mr. Dritan Kolleshi (ESSEDRA project expert) and Mrs. Katia Zene (staff VIS Albania) participating in the meeting. The participants were members of “Farmers of Pajova” Association. It is a newly founded association which is specialised in breeding the turkey. The turkey is an autochthonous species of Peqin (region of Elbasan). Besides turkey breeding which brings the major part of incomes, the farmers of this area cultivate olives, apples and vegetables.The meeting started with a presentation of VIS Albania and the ESSEDRA project by K. Zene and the reason of this meeting. Then, the expert talked mainly about the EU production standards and how these requirements will be soon approved and required in Albania and the Albanian farmers, as small-scale producers, will have to adapt their production chain to these new requirements and standards. Since a year ago, the farmers used to sell their agricultural products and the turkeys independently, wherever and whenever they could find a possible buyer or during the Pazar Days organized once a week in the main street of this commune. Now, they are starting to learn how an association works, what obligations they have and what profits they gain by being part of it. They were very interested to be part of a project, which would give them a hand in learning how to achieve proper standards and how to find a good market to sell their agricultural products.
The second part of the meeting was focussed on the Ark of Taste products. The farmers filled in the first nomination forms of Ark of Taste. The autochthonous turkey of this region is very tasty and used in various traditional dishes of this area.
